Storm Dave Leaves Thousands Without Power as Ireland Faces Easter Weather Warnings

Storm Dave swept northeast across Ireland overnight, leaving thousands of homes and businesses without electricity before weather warnings expired. At the storm’s peak, roughly 18,000 properties, farms, and commercial establishments were without power. By 1 p.m. on Sunday, that number had dropped to around 1,000, as ESB Networks crews worked to restore electricity. The operator urged the public to avoid fallen power lines, emphasizing the danger of approaching or touching them.

The storm also disrupted travel, with Dublin Airport reporting 17 flight cancellations, 13 diversions, and 53 go-arounds on Saturday. The airport operator, daa, cautioned that some disruptions could continue today due to planes and crews being displaced. Passengers were advised to contact their airlines directly for the latest information.

Heavy rainfall and localised flooding affected parts of County Donegal, including Anagaire, Gaoth Dobhair, Gleann Cholm Cille, An Fál Carrach, and Gort an Choirce. The R230 road between Gleann Cholm Cille and Mín an Aoire remained blocked after a landslide in Bráid, though Donegal County Council said it would aim to reopen the route today. Authorities advised motorists to exercise caution while traveling.

Met Éireann said unsettled weather is expected to continue over the Easter weekend. Easter Sunday is forecast to be bright and breezy, with sunny spells and scattered showers. On higher ground, some showers could fall as sleet or hail, with temperatures ranging from 7°C to 10°C.

Storm Dave was the fourth named storm of the season, part of a pre-selected list of 21 names coordinated by the Irish, UK, and Dutch national weather services. It caused widespread power outages and travel disruptions, highlighting the vulnerability of infrastructure during severe weather events.

Authorities said the storm underscored the importance of preparedness. ESB Networks reassured the public that all available crews were deployed in the affected areas and working to restore power as quickly as possible. Emergency services and local councils coordinated efforts to manage flooding, landslides, and road closures.

As Ireland moves into the Easter weekend, officials reminded residents to stay alert for remaining weather advisories and to follow guidance on safe travel and electrical hazards. While the storm has passed, its impacts on transportation, electricity, and local infrastructure serve as a reminder of the ongoing risks posed by extreme weather events.
