Saudi Arabia Hosts U.S.-Ukraine Talks in Jeddah: A Crucial Step Toward Conflict Resolution

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia – March 11, 2025

In a significant diplomatic move, Saudi Arabia hosted high-level talks between the United States and Ukraine in Jeddah on Tuesday, marking a critical effort to mend relations following recent tensions between the two nations. The meeting comes after a public dispute between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on February 28, which led to the suspension of U.S. military aid to Ukraine and raised concerns among European allies.

Saudi Arabia Hosts U.S.-Ukraine Talks in Jeddah

Saudi Arabia’s Role as a Neutral Mediator

For the past three years, Saudi Arabia has actively facilitated peace discussions regarding the Ukraine crisis. By hosting these key negotiations, the Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering dialogue and diplomatic solutions on the global stage. The talks in Jeddah underscore Saudi Arabia’s growing role as a neutral mediator in international conflicts.

Separate Meetings and a Joint Session

The discussions began with separate meetings between the delegations and Saudi officials. President Zelensky met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh, where he expressed gratitude for Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic efforts.

“We appreciate Saudi Arabia’s support and the Crown Prince’s wisdom in global affairs,” Zelensky stated.

The U.S. delegation, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and envoy Steve Witkoff, also held a separate meeting with the Crown Prince. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian delegation, led by Andriy Yermak, head of Zelensky’s office, met with Saudi officials alongside Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.

The Face-to-Face U.S.-Ukraine Meeting

In a landmark moment, the U.S. and Ukrainian delegations met face-to-face for the first time since relations soured. The closed-door session focused on military aid and a potential framework for negotiations with Russia.

Key Proposals and Statements

During the talks, Ukraine proposed a partial ceasefire with Russia, which includes:

  • Halting drone and long-range missile attacks.
  • Avoiding strikes on civilian and military infrastructure.
  • Reducing military activities in the Black Sea.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the importance of Russia’s cooperation, stating, “If Russia agrees to a 30-day ceasefire, we can begin negotiations.”

Andriy Yermak, Ukraine’s chief negotiator, echoed the sentiment, saying, “A just peace is our goal, and we await Moscow’s response.”

President Zelensky expressed cautious optimism, noting, “This initiative is positive, and we look forward to tangible results.”

A Pivotal Moment for Diplomacy

The Jeddah discussions represent a pivotal moment in diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict. While challenges remain, the talks signal hope for stability, with future progress hinging on Russia’s response and the possibility of broader negotiations.

Beyond the immediate Ukraine crisis, Saudi Arabia’s role highlights the importance of global mediation in resolving conflicts. The Kingdom’s efforts in Jeddah may serve as a model for fostering dialogue and bridging divides in other regions.

As the world watches, the hope is that this initiative will spark wider peace efforts, bringing an end to violence and fostering harmony worldwide.

Let peace prevail.
