Cork Hurling Team Struggles with Injury Blow as Pádraig Power Ruled Out for the Season

Cork’s hurling team has been dealt a significant blow with the news that forward Pádraig Power will miss the rest of the season due to a torn cruciate ligament. The Blarney native, who had already been forced off the field early during last weekend’s Allianz Hurling League Division 1A match against Limerick due to a dislocated shoulder, was later diagnosed with the knee injury that will rule him out for the entire year.

Power, 24, had been one of the standout players for Cork after a disrupted campaign last year. Despite limited game time, he earned recognition for his efforts, notably being named Hurler of the Week by the GAA following an impressive 1-04 from play in Cork’s opening league win over Wexford. Manager Pat Ryan expressed disappointment at the loss, saying that Power had shown promise and was expected to build on his performance from the previous season. “He did so well last year, battling back from injury and contributing to the All-Ireland semi-final,” Ryan told The Echo. “We were hoping he would kick on this year after his performance against Wexford.”

The loss of Power adds to Cork’s growing injury list. Ben Cunningham, another forward, will also be sidelined for at least three months due to a severe hamstring injury he sustained while playing for UCC last week. Ryan confirmed that Cunningham would return to his club for recovery.

These injuries mean Cork now faces a challenging situation, having lost four attackers in a week. Conor Lehane also picked up a dislocated shoulder against Limerick, and while he is expected to be out for six weeks, Seamus Harnedy has a thumb injury but could still be fit for the next match against Tipperary on 22 February.

With key players unavailable, Cork’s management will need to adapt quickly as they look to keep their championship hopes alive in the upcoming months.
