A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a violent stabbing attack on two women at a house in Downpatrick, Co Down.
The incident took place on Stream Street on Wednesday morning. Police were alerted at around 8:30 am after receiving reports of a man armed with two knives attacking two women inside the property.
According to a spokesperson from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), the altercation escalated and spilled outside. One of the victims, a 35-year-old woman, was further assaulted in the back garden, where she sustained a severe knife wound to her neck, along with multiple lacerations to her head and face.
Police officers arrived at the scene and were able to intervene before the situation worsened. The second victim, a woman in her 50s, also suffered stab wounds during the attack.
Victims Hospitalised as Investigation Continues
Inspector Eamonn Campbell provided an update on the victims, stating: “Both women were taken to hospital, one via air ambulance and one by road. Whilst serious, their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening at this time.”
The suspect, a 26-year-old man, was taken into custody and is expected to be questioned about multiple offences, including attempted murder.
Police have not yet disclosed any details regarding a possible motive or the relationship between the suspect and the victims.
The attack has shocked the local community, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward as investigations continue.
