PTSB Restores Online Services After Widespread Technical Glitch

Permanent TSB (PTSB) has confirmed that a technical issue which disrupted access to its digital banking services on Wednesday has been resolved. The outage affected both the bank’s website and mobile app, leaving customers unable to log in or perform transactions for much of the day.

Users attempting to access services were met with error messages and login failures, prompting widespread frustration across social media platforms. In response, PTSB posted an update late Wednesday evening, assuring customers that the problem had been fixed.

“Some Android users may need to reinstall their app to log in,” the bank advised. “Apologies for the inconvenience caused. To support customers, our contact centre and several branches will open Friday 10am–2pm.”

The bank has not disclosed the exact cause of the disruption, but the issue is believed to have originated from internal technical systems. It marks the latest in a series of digital service challenges faced by PTSB in recent times.

In November 2024, the bank’s customers experienced delays in processing payments following a major outage linked to a third-party service provider. That incident also drew criticism from users and raised concerns about the bank’s technological resilience.

Despite the setbacks, PTSB has reiterated its commitment to strengthening its digital infrastructure. In March, during the bank’s 2024 financial results presentation, Chief Executive Eamonn Crowley highlighted a significant push toward digital transformation.

“We’ve invested €400 million in the bank over the last five years, the vast majority of that in the technology space,” Mr Crowley said. “Our goal is to ensure a seamless and secure banking experience for all customers.”

Wednesday’s disruption comes at a time when Irish banks are increasingly relying on digital platforms to serve a growing base of online users. With physical branches reducing in number, mobile and internet banking have become critical components of day-to-day banking operations.

Industry analysts note that while investments in technology are essential, ensuring stability and continuity of service is just as vital in maintaining customer trust. As more services shift online, even short outages can cause significant disruption, particularly for those who rely on mobile platforms for daily transactions.

PTSB’s decision to open select branches and extend contact centre support on Friday is seen as an effort to assist affected customers and restore confidence following the outage.

The bank has encouraged customers who continue to face issues, particularly Android users, to reinstall their app and contact support if problems persist.
