Tragic School Bus Fire in Thailand Claims 23 Lives

At least 23 people have lost their lives in Thailand after a school bus carrying over 40 students and teachers caught fire during a field trip on the outskirts of Bangkok. The incident has sparked an investigation into its causes, with 16 students and three teachers hospitalized for treatment, according to Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit.

Witnesses described harrowing scenes as thick grey smoke billowed from the bus, which was reported to be a natural gas vehicle (NGV). Images shared on social media and by local news outlets captured the intense blaze, which was eventually extinguished by fire crews. Photographers at the scene noted the presence of fire trucks, police, and rescue vehicles surrounding the charred remains of the bus, with firefighters working diligently at the entrance.

Acting police chief Kittirat Phanphet provided details at a press conference, explaining that teachers reported the fire ignited rapidly. “From speaking to witnesses, we believe the explosion was caused by a spark from the tyre that lit the gas cylinder that was powering the vehicle,” he said. He further mentioned that some students managed to escape through the windows in the chaos.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed her sorrow over the tragedy, stating that the students were on a field trip from Uthai Thani province, located approximately 250 kilometers north of the capital. “As a mother, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the families,” she posted on social media platform X.

The incident has raised concerns regarding safety standards for school transportation in Thailand. The government is expected to review regulations surrounding the operation of natural gas vehicles in light of this tragic event.

This devastating occurrence has cast a shadow over what was intended to be a day of learning and exploration for the students involved. Families and communities are now mourning the loss of young lives, while officials are pledging to investigate the circumstances that led to this heartbreaking incident.

As the nation grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, calls for improved safety measures in transportation are likely to intensify, ensuring that such incidents are prevented in the future.
