Elderly Pedestrian Killed After Being Hit by Car in Co Galway

GardaĆ are investigating a fatal road collision in County Galway after a man in his 80s was struck and killed by a car late Friday night.

The incident occurred at approximately 11.30pm on the N83 Tuam Road at Peake in Loughgeorge. Emergency services were called to the scene, where the pedestrian was pronounced dead a short time later. His body was taken to University Hospital Galway, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted.

The driver of the vehicle, a man in his 20s, was also taken to hospital for a medical assessment. GardaĆ said he did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

The N83 remains closed between Currandulla and Claregalway this morning to allow for a full technical examination by forensic collision investigators. Local diversions have been put in place, and motorists are advised to avoid the area and follow alternative routes until further notice.

GardaĆ are appealing for witnesses to come forward, particularly anyone who may have been travelling on the N83 near Loughgeorge between 11pm and midnight. Officers are especially interested in hearing from drivers who may have dash-cam footage that could assist the investigation.

ā€œAnyone who was in the Peake area at the time and who may have seen something, no matter how minor it seems, is urged to contact us,ā€ a Garda spokesperson said.

Members of the public with relevant information are asked to contact Galway Garda Station on 091 538000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

The tragedy marks another fatality on Ireland’s roads this year, as authorities continue to urge caution among motorists and pedestrians alike, particularly during the darker evening hours of autumn.

Local residents have expressed sadness at the incident, describing the stretch of road where the collision occurred as ā€œdangerousā€ and poorly lit at night. Calls have been renewed for improved lighting and pedestrian safety measures along the busy N83 route, which connects Galway city to Tuam.

The deceased man’s name has not yet been released pending notification of family members.
