Enoch Burke Returns to School Gates After Release from Mountjoy Prison

Enoch Burke arrived outside Wilson’s Hospital School in Co Westmeath on Wednesday morning, seeking access to the school grounds where he previously worked as a teacher.

Mr Burke was released from Mountjoy Prison yesterday following a High Court order from Mr Justice Brian Cregan. He had been imprisoned since late November for breaching a court order that barred him from entering the school.

Since his arrival at around 9.20am, private security personnel have prevented Mr Burke from entering the campus. About half a dozen supporters gathered at the school gates in his support. GardaĂ were present at the scene but later left without incident.

Speaking to the media outside the school, Mr Burke described his dismissal and prison sentence as an “insult to the institutions of the state.” He said he felt a “duty” to attend his former workplace, adding that students at the school “know me, and they know my personal character. That’s my vision, that I would be a good teacher to them.”

Last week, Mr Burke sought a temporary injunction against the Disciplinary Appeals Panel (DAP), which is reviewing his dismissal. During yesterday’s hearing, Mr Justice Cregan said Mr Burke had raised “substantive” and “credible” issues with the panel. The judge ordered Mr Burke’s release from prison, stating it was “for one reason and one reason only, interest in the administration of justice,” and to allow him time to prepare his case against the DAP.

The judge imposed strict conditions on his release, warning that Mr Burke must not trespass on school property. “If he does, I will have no hesitation in bringing him back to prison,” Mr Justice Cregan said. During the proceedings, Mr Burke indicated several times that he intended to return to Wilson’s Hospital School immediately upon release.

Speaking outside Mountjoy Prison yesterday, Mr Burke confirmed that he planned to attend the school the following day, despite being legally barred from entering the premises. His return to the school gates has reignited attention on his ongoing legal battle and the circumstances surrounding his dismissal.

The situation at Wilson’s Hospital School remains tense, with security measures in place to prevent Mr Burke from entering the grounds. Observers say the case highlights broader issues around disciplinary procedures in schools and the enforcement of court orders in sensitive employment disputes.
