Met Éireann issues orange and yellow alerts as heavy rain and flooding threaten parts of Ireland

Met Éireann has issued Status Orange and Yellow weather warnings as heavy rain and flooding affect several counties across Ireland. The most severe warning, Status Orange, covers counties Cork and Kerry and came into effect at 3am, remaining valid until 6pm. The forecaster predicts “significant rainfall accumulations,” particularly on higher ground, with the heaviest totals expected in west Cork and Kerry.

Authorities warned that the intense rainfall could cause serious river and surface water flooding, creating hazardous conditions for drivers and poor visibility on roads. Met Éireann noted that Status Orange weather conditions may pose a threat to both life and property.

Status Yellow warnings are in place for counties Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Donegal, and all of Connacht until midnight. An additional yellow alert covers Tipperary, Waterford, and Wexford until 3am on Sunday. In these regions, the risk of flooding is elevated due to saturated ground and high river levels.

Across the border, the UK Met Office has issued a Status Yellow alert for counties Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone, and Derry. Forecasters warned that periods of heavy rain could lead to travel disruptions and localized flooding. This advisory remains in effect until 6am Sunday.

The Road Safety Authority has urged drivers to exercise extra caution while the warnings are active. Officials emphasized slowing down, maintaining safe distances, and avoiding areas prone to flooding where possible.

Met Éireann expects the rain to continue throughout the day in the affected areas, with higher ground most at risk of flooding. The agency has advised residents in low-lying regions to remain alert and monitor local updates on river levels and road conditions.

The warnings come amid a period of unsettled weather across Ireland, with forecasters predicting further rainfall in the coming days. Emergency services are on standby to respond to incidents of flooding and potential road closures.

Residents in Cork, Kerry, and other affected counties have been advised to review travel plans and avoid non-essential journeys where possible. The combination of heavy rainfall and already saturated ground increases the likelihood of rivers overflowing and flash flooding in vulnerable areas.

This weather event highlights the continued risk of severe rainfall across Ireland and Northern Ireland, with authorities urging communities to remain vigilant and follow safety advice.
