Resurgent Meath Set for Toughest Test Yet as Donegal Clash Looms in All-Ireland Semi-Final

A decade-long period of struggle appears to be firmly in the rearview mirror for Meath, who have stormed into their first All-Ireland semi-final since 2009 after a stunning series of championship wins. But their greatest challenge yet lies ahead this weekend: a clash with in-form Ulster champions Donegal.

Meath’s remarkable revival under manager Robbie Brennan has captivated GAA fans this summer. Having endured 15 years as a nostalgic afterthought, the Royals have reasserted themselves on the national stage, defeating Dublin in a seismic Leinster semi-final shock, and going on to overcome Cork, Kerry, and last year’s All-Ireland finalists Galway en route to the semi-finals.

The transformation has been underpinned by a squad that’s clicked under new rules which favour their athletic midfielders and direct, aggressive style. Conor Duke, Bryan Menton, and the injured Jack Flynn have excelled at exploiting the revised kickout structures, while forwards Mathew Costello and Jordan Morris have thrived in the 3v3 inside-forward system. Defender Seán Rafferty has quickly developed into a fan favourite for his physicality and leadership.

Their run hasn’t been without disruption — Ulster-based coaches Martin Corey and Joe McMahon departed shortly before the championship, dampening some early-season expectations. But Meath have shown resilience and momentum since that point, responding with a string of gritty and thrilling victories.

Yet Donegal represent a different kind of hurdle.

Under the renewed leadership of Jim McGuinness, Donegal have rediscovered their winning mentality, capturing back-to-back Ulster titles and showcasing a formidable mix of athleticism, tactical fluidity, and scoring depth. Their emphatic second-half turnaround against Monaghan — scoring 1-15 after the break — highlighted their attacking potency and relentless energy, now dubbed “repeat sprintability.”

Veteran talisman Michael Murphy has returned to vintage form, offering aerial prowess and leadership, while the likes of Peadar Mogan, Ryan McHugh, and Michael Langan continue to produce from distance and playmaking roles. Oisín Gallen leads the forward line, with Paddy McBrearty poised to make a potential impact off the bench.

Though Meath’s rise has captured the imagination, Donegal’s experience and depth, especially under McGuinness’ guidance, make them clear favourites. Yet with belief surging and momentum building, Meath may not be done defying the odds just yet.

The All-Ireland semi-final takes place this weekend, with both counties eyeing a spot in the final — and, potentially, the completion of an extraordinary turnaround.
