Leitrim Forced to Forfeit Division 3 Clash Against Fermanagh Amid Player Shortage

Leitrim’s senior football team will not take the field for their Division 3 Allianz League match against Fermanagh in Ballinamore, citing an injury crisis and player unavailability. The decision marks an unprecedented moment for the county, which has struggled with squad depth throughout the campaign.

Severe Player Shortages

Leitrim’s squad has been decimated by injuries, retirements, and player commitments elsewhere. With six key players required for the U20 Connacht Championship clash against Galway on Wednesday, and a further 12 sidelined with soft tissue injuries, the county had only 16 available players for Sunday’s match—far below the required numbers for a competitive game.

The situation has been worsened by:

  • Two first-choice goalkeepers ruled out due to injuries
  • Several players emigrating to Australia
  • A physically demanding schedule due to a previously postponed match, forcing Leitrim to play five games in a row

A Difficult League Campaign

Leitrim’s struggles have been evident throughout their Allianz League campaign, with the county losing all five of their matches so far. Manager Steven Poacher acknowledged the challenges, stating that 20 out of the 32-man squad were experiencing inter-county football for the first time this season.

“This is the first time I have ever seen a situation like this in my time involved in county football,” Poacher said.

The county had already shown signs of struggling with numbers, fielding just 22 players against Offaly two weeks ago. The worsening injury crisis meant that Leitrim risked having only 12 players on the pitch if the match proceeded.

Leitrim GAA Expresses Regret

Leitrim GAA released a statement expressing deep regret over the decision, but stressed that it was made with player welfare in mind.

“We must stress that the Leitrim players were very keen to play this game if it was at all possible,” the statement read. “However, due to overall player welfare considerations and a duty of care towards the group for the greater good, we have had to take this unprecedented and unfortunate decision.”

The county board also pointed to the high number of players from last year’s panel who had made themselves unavailable for the 2025 season, further depleting the squad.

Impact on Division 3

Leitrim currently sit bottom of Division 3 and, with just two games remaining in the campaign, their hopes of avoiding relegation appear slim. The walkover will hand Fermanagh the points, further complicating Leitrim’s difficult season.

This latest setback highlights the challenges faced by smaller counties in maintaining competitive inter-county teams, particularly during gruelling winter conditions and fixture congestion.
