US President-elect Donald Trump is set to attend the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, an event that could provide a platform for French President Emmanuel Macron to engage with the unpredictable incoming US leader. The two are expected to meet on the sidelines of the ceremony, although no official agenda has been disclosed.
The reopening of the iconic cathedral, which was severely damaged by fire in 2019, is expected to draw numerous world leaders, including Trump. Macron, known for his efforts to mediate between Europe and the US, may seize this opportunity to discuss issues of shared concern, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. European leaders are particularly wary of Trump’s stance on Ukraine, with fears that he might reduce US military aid to the country at a critical moment in its fight against Russian forces.
Macron, a strong proponent of NATO and Ukraine’s resistance, is expected to emphasize the importance of continued support for Ukraine. According to Heather Conley, senior adviser at the German Marshall Fund, Macron’s approach during Trump’s first term was “personalized” and “successful to some degree.” She noted that Macron understands Trump’s appreciation for the grandeur of state events, a sentiment he plans to embrace once again.
The Notre-Dame ceremony marks a significant moment, as the cathedral reopens after being nearly destroyed in the fire. Trump will join a host of dignitaries and world leaders, while Macron will host a bilateral meeting with him at the Élysée Palace. Following that, Macron is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, though it remains unclear whether the three leaders will convene together.
First Lady Jill Biden will represent the United States at the reopening, as Trump has yet to be inaugurated. Meanwhile, Pope Francis, initially expected to attend, will be absent due to his ongoing trip to Corsica. However, he has sent a message to the French people, which will be read during the ceremony.
The cathedral’s reopening comes after a harrowing fire that left the world in shock. The blaze, which was believed to have been caused by an electrical fault, destroyed parts of the 850-year-old monument, symbolizing a sense of universal sadness for many. Fashion designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, who has created new vestments for the clergy, described the fire as a sign of Western civilization’s decline.
The service will feature prayers, organ music, and hymns, followed by a concert with performances from artists like Lang Lang, Pretty Yende, and Pharrell Williams. The first mass at the cathedral will take place tomorrow morning, followed by a second public service in the evening.
