Heathrow Passenger Numbers Fall as Iran Conflict Disrupts Middle East Travel

Heathrow Airport reported a 5% decline in passenger numbers for April, falling to 6.7 million travellers, as the ongoing Iran conflict continued to disrupt global aviation routes and reduce traffic through the Middle East.

The UK’s busiest airport said the sharpest impact was felt on routes linked to the Gulf, where passenger volumes dropped by more than 50%. The decline reflects widespread disruption across regional airspace following the outbreak of war on February 28, when Iran launched missile and drone strikes targeting Israel and allied infrastructure across the Gulf.

The escalation forced repeated changes to flight paths and temporary restrictions across key aviation corridors. Gulf carriers including Emirates, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways, which rely heavily on connecting long-haul passengers between continents, saw their operations significantly affected. Many travellers opted to avoid transit through the region altogether, shifting to alternative hubs in Europe and beyond.

Despite the overall decline, Heathrow recorded a 10% increase in transfer passengers compared with the same period last year. The airport said this growth reflected rerouted international traffic flowing through London as airlines adjusted schedules and passengers sought safer or more reliable connection points. A similar trend was observed in the previous month, suggesting continued rerouting of global travel flows.

Heathrow had already warned that its full-year passenger forecast could come under pressure due to instability in the Middle East, even as it continued to benefit from diverted demand linked to airspace closures in affected regions.

Chief executive Thomas Woldbye described the situation as a “short-term disruption”, stressing that underlying demand for international travel remains strong. He said the airport is monitoring developments closely and will reassess its 2026 passenger forecast in June.

The airport’s performance highlights the broader impact of geopolitical instability on global aviation networks, particularly those passing through strategically important hubs in the Gulf. While Heathrow has seen some offsetting gains from rerouted traffic, the overall reduction in passenger volumes underscores the sensitivity of international travel to regional conflict.

Aviation analysts note that continued uncertainty in Middle Eastern airspace could prolong disruptions, although long-term demand for global connectivity remains resilient. Heathrow’s latest figures reflect a market still adapting to shifting routes and evolving security conditions across key international corridors.
