The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), dedicated to combating online child abuse images, reports a troubling rise in the prevalence of AI-generated child sexual abuse material, complicating its efforts to protect vulnerable children. In the last six months, the IWF has noted a 6% increase in AI-generated content, surpassing the amount detected in the previous year.
“I find it really chilling as it feels like we are at a tipping point,” said “Jeff,” a senior analyst at the IWF, who prefers to remain anonymous for safety reasons. He described the disturbing realism of the AI-generated images, stating that even trained analysts are struggling to distinguish between real and artificial depictions of child abuse.
The IWF explains that the technology used to create these images is often trained on existing sexual abuse imagery, resulting in increasingly realistic representations. Derek Ray-Hill, the interim chief executive of the IWF, emphasized the severe repercussions of this disturbing trend. “AI-generated child sexual abuse material causes horrific harm, not only to those who might see it but to survivors who are repeatedly victimized every time images and videos of their abuse are mercilessly exploited for the twisted enjoyment of predators online,” he said.
Alarmingly, the IWF has found that nearly all of this harmful content is not relegated to the dark web but exists in publicly accessible areas of the internet. Professor Clare McGlynn, a legal expert specializing in online abuse and pornography at Durham University, highlighted how the advent of this technology has transformed the production of child sexual abuse material. “It is now easy and straightforward to produce AI-generated child sexual abuse images and then advertise and share them online,” she noted.
Professor McGlynn added that the lack of fear of prosecution has made it easier for individuals to create and disseminate such material. In recent months, several individuals have faced charges for using AI to generate explicit images of children. One notable case involved Neil Darlington, who used AI to blackmail girls into sending him explicit content.
The IWF remains vigilant, collaborating with law enforcement and technology providers to remove and trace these illicit images online. They continue to stress that creating explicit depictions of children is illegal, regardless of whether they are generated using AI.
