Microsoft to Invest €4 Million in AI Skilling in Ireland as Company Marks 40 Years

Microsoft has announced plans to invest an additional €4 million in AI and digital skills development in Ireland over the next three years. The investment builds on €8 million already spent by the company in the country since 2018.

The funding will provide opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to develop AI and digital skills. It will also support the expansion of Microsoft’s ‘Dream Space’ programme, which offers AI and STEM education to young learners across Ireland.

The announcement coincides with Microsoft’s 40th anniversary in Ireland, where the company has grown into a major hub for innovation and employment. A socio-economic impact report released by Microsoft on the anniversary highlights that the company has contributed €40 billion to Ireland’s economy over the past decade.

Microsoft employs around 6,400 people in Ireland, spanning its European headquarters, data centre campus, gaming division Activision Blizzard King, and LinkedIn operations. The company has been central to Ireland’s digital ecosystem, attracting talent and investment and fostering technology development.

James O’Connor, Microsoft Ireland Site Leader and Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Global Operations Service Centre, said the company’s Irish operations have been “at the centre of Microsoft’s journey of innovation.” He added that Ireland has become a strategic international hub, supporting the company’s global growth while driving local economic development.

The anniversary event in Dublin was attended by Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Higher Education Minister James Lawless. Speaking at the event, Mr Martin described Microsoft’s presence as “a gateway investment” that helped position Ireland as a global digital leader. He praised the country’s “world-class talent, vibrant technology ecosystem, and strong culture of innovation” as key factors in the company’s success.

The investment comes amid Microsoft’s broader global restructuring. In July, the company announced plans to cut approximately 9,000 jobs worldwide. It has not confirmed the number of roles in Ireland that may be affected, but the Department of Enterprise said it had received a collective redundancy notification from the company.

Despite the global job cuts, Microsoft said its commitment to Ireland remains strong. The new AI and digital skills initiatives are designed to strengthen Ireland’s workforce, equip people with the tools to succeed in emerging technology sectors, and ensure continued growth in STEM fields.

By expanding programmes like Dream Space and supporting training opportunities, Microsoft aims to create a lasting impact on Ireland’s talent pool while reinforcing the country’s position as a hub for technology and innovation in Europe.
