Petrol Prices Dip Slightly in July, While EV Charging Costs Rise

Petrol prices in Ireland saw a modest decline in July, while diesel costs remained unchanged, according to AA Ireland’s latest monthly fuel price survey. However, from today, some electric vehicle (EV) owners will face higher on-the-go charging costs.

The survey shows the average price of unleaded petrol dropped to €1.73 per litre, down from €1.77 in June. Diesel prices, meanwhile, held steady at €1.69 per litre for the second consecutive month.

While the slight dip in petrol prices offers some relief to motorists, the unchanged diesel rates may provide a degree of stability during the peak summer travel season. “July saw a small shift in the right direction for petrol drivers, with prices easing slightly,” an AA Ireland spokesperson said. “While diesel remains unchanged, the stability may offer some predictability for most motorists as we move through summer when longer drives usually take place.”

However, for EV users relying on public charging infrastructure, new costs are kicking in. ESB ecars has increased its high-powered charger rates from €0.59 to €0.66 per kilowatt-hour (kWh). This marks a notable rise for those using fast-charging services while on the road.

There has been no change to the cost of home EV charging, which remains the most affordable option for many drivers. Nonetheless, AA Ireland warns the public charging price hike could affect EV drivers without access to at-home charging, particularly those travelling on staycations.

“The recent changes to EV on-the-go charging prices by ESB ecars, while still competitive in the market, will add additional costs to the motorist,” AA Ireland stated. “This is especially impactful for drivers who have no alternative option to charge during longer trips.”

Fuel and energy prices continue to be closely monitored by motorists amid fluctuating global oil markets and ongoing efforts to transition to more sustainable transport solutions. The increase in EV public charging costs comes at a time when Ireland is pushing to expand its EV adoption and charging infrastructure under its climate goals.

With fuel prices relatively stable but EV charging costs on the rise, drivers—regardless of vehicle type—are being advised to plan their journeys and refuelling strategies carefully, especially during the busy summer holiday period.
