A close-knit community in west Donegal is reeling in shock following the destruction of a cherished local church in a devastating fire overnight.
The blaze broke out at Teach Pobail Mhuire (St Mary’s Church) in Doirí Beaga, Gaoth Dobhair, in the early hours of Monday morning. Emergency services were alerted at around 4am, with five fire service units and gardaí attending the scene.
Despite efforts to contain the blaze, the church — which dates back to 1972 and is one of the largest in the Raphoe diocese — was completely gutted.
Parish Priest, An t-Athair Brian Ó Fearraigh, expressed deep sorrow and thanked emergency services for their swift response. “This morning, our hearts are heavy as we come to terms with the terrible tragedy… It’s a church that holds a lot of dear memories for our parishioners. Words fall silent in the face of such destruction,” he said, calling the building the community’s “spiritual home.”
Local representatives echoed his sentiments, with Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty describing the incident as “heartbreaking.” He revealed the personal significance of the church, sharing that he had been married there and that his father’s anniversary Mass was scheduled to take place there this week.
“The fire has been extinguished, but the building is completely destroyed. Still, we will see a rebirth here,” Doherty said on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland.
Fianna Fáil TD Pat The Cope Gallagher called the loss “devastating,” especially coming just a day after the church was packed with worshippers for Easter Sunday Mass. “These churches are our second homes… the very heart and soul of our communities,” he said.
Local councillor John Sheamuis Ó Fearraigh described the scene as “absolutely shocking.” Looking at the charred remains, he said, “You’d think it was a dream, but it’s not — it’s reality. The community will rebuild. Gaoth Dobhair people are resilient.”
Diocesan Administrator Monsignor Kevin Gillespie, a native of the area, expressed heartbreak but pledged full support to the parish priest and community. “With the help of God, Our Lady, and the support of the people, the Church will be rebuilt one way or another,” he said.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway.
