Man Charged Following Fatal Assault in Co Roscommon on New Year’s Day

A 46-year-old man has appeared in court charged in connection with the death of a man in his 30s following an alleged assault in Co Roscommon on New Year’s Day.

Yevhen Shutko, a resident of the county, was brought before Roscommon District Court on Tuesday morning. He faces a charge of intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to Jordon Nevin in Ballaghaderreen on 1 January.

Mr Nevin, in his 30s, was critically injured in an incident on Barrack Street during the early hours of New Year’s Day. He was taken to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin for treatment but died there on Monday evening.

During a brief special sitting of the court, Detective Garda Brendan McGrath told Judge James Faughnan that Mr Shutko had been charged under Section 4 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997. Gardaí indicated that further charges could be brought against him in due course.

The court also heard from defending solicitor Bríd Miller, who applied for bail on behalf of Mr Shutko. Judge Faughnan refused the application, citing the seriousness of the allegations, and remanded the accused in custody. Mr Shutko is scheduled to appear at Ballaghaderreen District Court on Friday, 9 January.

The assault in Ballaghaderreen has shocked the local community. Residents described the incident as tragic, with many expressing concern over public safety following the fatal attack. Gardaí have appealed for anyone with information about the early-morning events to come forward to assist with the investigation.

Local authorities have confirmed that a full investigation is ongoing. The scene on Barrack Street was examined in the hours following the incident, and Gardaí are reviewing CCTV footage and witness statements.

Jordon Nevin’s death comes amid a period of heightened concern over violent incidents in the region, with community leaders calling for increased vigilance and support services for families affected by such tragedies.

As the investigation continues, Gardaí are urging anyone with relevant information to contact the local station. Meanwhile, the legal proceedings against Yevhen Shutko will continue next week, when he appears at Ballaghaderreen District Court for further hearings.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about violent crime in the area, and authorities have emphasized the importance of community cooperation in ensuring justice is served.
