A 76-year-old man has appeared before a Dublin court charged with 79 historical sexual offences involving four young girls, following his extradition from the United States.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested by GardaĆ at Dublin Airport early Tuesday morning. According to Garda Sergeant Amy Kelly, he was taken into custody at 5:56am and transported to Ballymun Garda Station, where he was formally charged with the offences.
The charges relate to incidents alleged to have occurred between 1971 and 1981 in several locations across south Dublin, including Dun Laoghaire, Killiney, Blackrock, Deansgrange, and Foxrock. The man faces 78 counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape.
Of the 79 charges, 42 relate to one complainant and 34 to a second. Two counts concern a third alleged victim, while one charge pertains to a fourth. At the time of the alleged offences, the girls were aged between eight and 14.
Appearing before Judge Michelle Finan at Dublin District Court, the accused sat in a wheelchair, dressed in a green top, grey shorts, white socks and tan slip-on shoes. He did not address the court during the brief hearing.
His solicitor, Tracy Horan, told the court that the man is unemployed, has no assets, and is in need of urgent medical care. She stated that he currently does not have a hearing aid and requires dentures in order to eat properly.
There was no application for bail during the hearing. Judge Finan granted the man free legal aid and ordered that he receive the necessary medical attention while in custody.
The accused has been remanded in custody to appear again at Cloverhill District Court on Tuesday of next week.
The case marks the culmination of a lengthy extradition process involving cooperation between Irish and U.S. authorities. The man’s return to Ireland to face charges signals a continued effort by law enforcement to pursue justice in historical abuse cases.
