Record Crowds Gather for Tullamore Show as Livestock and Sustainability Take Centre Stage

Thousands of visitors are flocking to the Butterfield Estate in Blueball, on the outskirts of Tullamore, for the country’s largest one-day agricultural event. The Tullamore Show, officially opened this afternoon by Tánaiste Simon Harris, has drawn record participation, with more than 5,000 entries in competitions across its various sections.

Renowned as the national livestock showcase, the event highlights pedigree cattle among the finest in Europe, alongside top-quality horses, poultry, and farm produce. Organisers say this year’s show has exceeded all expectations in both attendance and participation.

One of the major attractions this year is the return of the Sustainable Livestock Village, powered entirely by hydrogen — a first for any Irish show or event, according to organisers. The feature promotes environmentally responsible farming practices, with a focus on the role of young farmers in driving sustainable change. Macra has joined the village for the first time to spotlight generational renewal and youth-led innovation.

While livestock remains the centrepiece, the machinery exhibition has grown considerably in recent years, and organisers report a significant expansion in this year’s listings. The display includes the latest in agricultural technology and equipment, reflecting the industry’s continuing evolution.

Safety is also high on the agenda with the Farm Safety Live event, developed by FRS Co-Op, the Health and Safety Authority, and FBD Insurance, in partnership with the Tullamore Show. This year’s demonstrations put a particular emphasis on chainsaw safety, following increased demand for training after Storm Éowyn caused severe damage earlier this year.

Experts are offering hands-on sessions covering tractor driving and power take-off safety, safe use of quads and all-terrain vehicles, and proper livestock handling. The initiative aims to reduce accidents and raise awareness about the dangers posed by farm machinery and animals.

The event takes place against the backdrop of recently announced Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reforms by the European Commission. While the show focuses on farming excellence, discussions around the reforms are expected among attendees and exhibitors.

Gardaí have implemented a comprehensive traffic management plan to accommodate the influx of visitors. The main N52 is closed to through traffic between Mucklagh and Blueball, with alternative routes in place for non-attendees. Four large car parks, spanning 240 acres, are available, with dedicated routes directing vehicles straight to parking areas.

With its combination of top-tier livestock displays, cutting-edge machinery, sustainability initiatives, and vital safety education, this year’s Tullamore Show is being hailed by organisers as one of the most successful in its history.
