Trump Signs Sweeping Tax and Spending Bill Amid Independence Day Celebrations

U.S. President Donald Trump signed into law a far-reaching tax and spending bill on Thursday during a high-profile Independence Day ceremony at the White House, marking one of the most significant legislative victories of his second term.

Surrounded by supporters, members of Congress, and military families on the South Lawn, Trump praised the legislation as a “historic win” for the American people. The event featured patriotic fanfare, including military flyovers by stealth bombers and fighter jets that recently participated in strikes on Iran.

The newly signed bill cements permanent tax cuts originally enacted during Trump’s first term in 2017, implements deep reductions in federal spending, and significantly increases funding for border security. It also provides financial support for Trump’s immigration enforcement initiatives, but has drawn criticism for provisions that could lead to millions of Americans losing health insurance and food aid.

“So many different groups of people are being taken care of — the military, civilians of all types, jobs of all types,” Trump said during the ceremony. “You have the biggest tax cut, the biggest spending cut, the largest border security investment in American history.”

The bill narrowly passed the Republican-controlled House of Representatives on Wednesday in a 218-214 vote following an emotional and contentious floor debate. Just two Republicans joined Democrats in voting against the bill, expressing concern over its projected cost and impact on low-income Americans.

The legislation, which is expected to add over $3 trillion to the national debt, has faced strong opposition from Democrats. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries delivered a record-breaking eight-hour speech condemning the bill as a boon to the wealthy at the expense of vulnerable Americans.

“This is a betrayal of the American people,” said Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin. “Trump and the GOP have chosen billionaires and special interests over working families. Voters will remember this in 2026.”

Despite criticism, the White House has framed the bill as a bold move to stimulate economic growth and strengthen national security. Trump thanked House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune for steering the bill through Congress and hailed the measure as a sign of American strength and resurgence.

Following the signing, Trump mingled with attendees, posing for photos with Republican leaders and his cabinet, and declaring the bill a gift to the nation on its 249th birthday.
