Zelensky Vows Not to Cede Territory as Ukraine Marks National Flag Day

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed on Friday that his country would not surrender any of its land to Russia, as he addressed the nation during a ceremony marking National Flag Day. The event came on the eve of Ukraine’s Independence Day and was attended by senior government officials.

In a speech steeped in symbolism, Zelensky described the Ukrainian flag as a powerful emblem for those living under Russian occupation. “They keep the flag. They keep it because they know that we will not gift our land to an occupier,” he said. He added that the flag embodied the sacrifices of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers defending cities and towns across the country. “This flag symbolises the dearest thing for hundreds of our warriors – men and women – from all over Ukraine who defend not just a specific direction of the front line, not just Vovchansk or Dobropillia, but entire Ukraine.”

The remarks underscored Kyiv’s determination to resist Russian advances, even as the conflict enters its third year with heavy casualties on both sides. Zelensky has long insisted that a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin is the only viable path toward ending the war, but negotiations remain elusive. He accused Moscow of deliberately blocking any such talks. Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed there was “no meeting planned,” saying an agenda was not ready.

Meanwhile, international pressure is mounting. US President Donald Trump signaled frustration at the lack of progress following his recent meeting with Putin in Alaska. Trump warned that unless meaningful steps are taken toward peace within two weeks, Washington would impose sweeping new sanctions on Moscow. “I will make an important decision in two weeks on Ukraine peace efforts,” Trump told reporters, adding that Russia could face “massive sanctions” or, alternatively, that he might “do nothing.”

On the battlefield, Russia announced further gains in eastern Ukraine. The Defence Ministry in Moscow said its forces had captured the villages of Sredneye and Kleban-Byk in the Donetsk region, bringing them closer to Kostiantynivka, a heavily fortified town that guards the road to Kramatorsk, one of Ukraine’s key military logistics hubs. The statement followed earlier claims that Russian troops had seized three more villages in Donetsk, a region Russia unilaterally annexed in September 2022.

Military analysts say the slow but grinding advances highlight Moscow’s strategy of attritional warfare, inching forward in costly, close-quarters fighting. Ukrainian commanders acknowledge the pressure but stress that defensive lines remain intact despite mounting challenges.

As Ukraine prepared for Independence Day, Zelensky framed the struggle as both military and symbolic. “Our flag is our unity and our future,” he said, urging citizens to remain resilient.
