Katie Taylor Motivated for Rematch with Amanda Serrano, Aims to Inspire Future Generations of Female Fighters
Katie Taylor is gearing up for what could be the most exciting fight of her career as she prepares for her highly anticipated rematch with Amanda Serrano this Saturday. The 38-year-old from Bray will face the Puerto Rican fighter, two years her junior, in a much-anticipated clash that promises to be another milestone in the world of women’s boxing.
The fight, which marks Taylor’s 25th professional bout, will take place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, where more than 60,000 fans are expected to be in attendance. The bout will feature on the undercard of the highly publicized Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson event, adding another layer of spectacle to an already highly anticipated night of boxing.
Taylor, who made history with Serrano two years ago as part of the first-ever female fight to headline Madison Square Garden, is thrilled by the scope of this rematch. Despite concerns over a year-long delay caused by Tyson’s health issues, Taylor sees the postponement as a blessing in disguise, granting her the opportunity to further enhance her fitness ahead of the fight.
Speaking at a public workout ahead of the bout, Taylor said, “We made history the first time, but it feels like this is on an even bigger scale again. It’s just amazing to be involved in another epic fight. Of all the fights I’ve had, this is the one that excites me the most. I really can’t wait to step into the ring.”
The fighter also expressed that the extended break had allowed her to be in the best shape of her career. “I’m in much better shape now, mentally and physically. This extra break has done me the world of good,” she added.
Although initially hoping to fight at Croke Park in Dublin before 100,000 spectators, Taylor is content to perform in front of a massive crowd in Dallas. She remained optimistic, noting that this fight could set the stage for future career-defining events, including the potential for a Croke Park fight in the future.
The fighter, known for her composed demeanor, was visibly emotional when discussing the role her mother, Bridget, has played in her career. “She’s the biggest support,” Taylor said, holding back tears as she acknowledged her mother’s presence.
The first Taylor-Serrano bout helped elevate women’s boxing, a sport that has made significant strides in recent years but still has room for growth. Taylor takes immense pride in the role she has played in bringing attention to the sport. “It’s amazing that female boxing has grown so much. When I first started, I was the only female fighter I knew of. Now, every boxing gym in Ireland is full of female fighters,” Taylor said.
As four world super lightweight titles are on the line following Taylor’s win over Chantelle Cameron, the stakes are higher than ever. The proud Irish champion sees the opportunity to defend her titles as an honor, and remains hopeful that her legacy will inspire the next generation of female boxers.
