Coolera-Strandhill made history on Sunday, winning their first-ever Connacht Club Senior Football Championship (SFC) after a dramatic extra-time defeat of Padraig Pearses. The Sligo club’s 1-15 to 1-14 victory marked a significant milestone, as they became the first Sligo team to claim the Connacht title since St. Mary’s in 1983.
The game, played at the Sligo town venue, saw Coolera-Strandhill’s Ross Doherty score a crucial goal in the first period of extra-time, a flicked finish from a Niall Murphy free that dropped into the Padraig Pearses’ goalmouth. This put Coolera-Strandhill two points ahead, 1-14 to 1-12, with the final period to come. Despite a late surge from the Roscommon side, Coolera-Strandhill held on to secure the historic win.
The match began with a fast-paced and competitive opening, with Coolera-Strandhill settling quickly. Niall Murphy opened the scoring with a point after just two minutes, starting a back-and-forth first half. Coolera-Strandhill’s Aaron O’Boyle and Padraig Pearses’ Conor Daly exchanged points, and the teams remained neck and neck throughout the first period.
Padraig Pearses had a strong finish to the first half, scoring four unanswered points, including a controversial free from Eoin Colleran, to take a 0-7 to 0-5 lead at the break. Coolera-Strandhill’s only first-half miss came from Ross O’Carroll, but Padraig Pearses had six wides, which would later prove costly.
The second half saw Padraig Pearses gain a five-point lead when Declan Kenny converted a penalty following a foul on Jack Tumulty. However, Coolera-Strandhill responded with determined play, including a stunning long-range point from goalkeeper Keelan Harte. Kevin Banks and substitute Adam Higgins added vital scores to narrow the deficit.
Padraig Pearses’ only second-half score came from a Colleran free, and with the game still tied at the end of regulation time, extra-time was required.
Doherty’s key goal in the eighth minute of extra-time gave Coolera-Strandhill the upper hand, and despite late points from Padraig Pearses, Coolera-Strandhill managed to maintain their lead. Substitute Adam Higgins sealed the victory with a third point in the 72nd minute, ensuring Coolera-Strandhill’s historic triumph.
Coolera-Strandhill’s victory was a collective team effort, with standout performances from Niall Murphy (0-5), Ross Doherty (1-0), and Higgins (0-3). For Padraig Pearses, Declan Kenny (1-3) and Jack Tumulty (0-3) were key contributors, but their 14 wides ultimately hindered their chances.
This win marks a new chapter for Coolera-Strandhill, who will now look ahead to the upcoming All-Ireland Club Championship.
