Gaza has seen a surge in violence, with reports indicating that more than 50 people were killed in the region within the last 24 hours. This alarming escalation follows the recent killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, prompting speculation about potential Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
On Saturday alone, at least 21 people, including children, lost their lives due to Israeli airstrikes, according to local hospital officials. Among the dead were 11 members of a single family killed in an attack on the Maghazi refugee camp, and 10 others who perished when a house in Zawayda was hit, as reported by al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah.
These incidents came on the heels of another attack that reportedly claimed 33 lives in Jabalia refugee camp late Friday night, as cited by the Palestinian WAFA news agency. If confirmed, these figures would bring the total death toll in Gaza to at least 54 in just one day.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in staggering casualties since hostilities escalated on October 7, 2023. According to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, at least 42,519 Palestinians have been killed and 99,637 others injured during the offensive. The ministry does not distinguish between civilian and militant casualties in its reporting.
In Israel, tensions remained high as sirens sounded warnings of incoming fire from Lebanon. A drone was reportedly launched toward a private residence owned by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the coastal town of Caesarea. Fortunately, neither Netanyahu nor his wife was at home during the incident, and there were no reported injuries, according to the Prime Minister’s spokesperson.
On Saturday morning, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that 55 projectiles were fired at northern Israel from Lebanon, with some intercepted en route. The situation escalated further when the IDF announced it had killed Nasser Rashid, the deputy commander of Hezbollah, in a strike in the town of Bint Jbeil, southern Lebanon. Rashid was allegedly involved in planning attacks against Israel.
In a separate incident, Lebanon’s health ministry reported that an Israeli airstrike hit a vehicle on a main highway north of Beirut, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. The identities of those in the car remain unclear.
As violence escalates between Israel and Hezbollah, the fallout from Sinwar’s killing continues to intensify, raising concerns about the broader implications for regional stability.
