Dundalk athlete Kate O’Connor has secured Ireland’s first World Indoor Championships medal in 19 years, winning silver in the pentathlon in Nanjing, China. The 24-year-old delivered a stellar performance, achieving three personal bests across the five events, and following up her recent European bronze with another podium finish.
O’Connor’s silver is Ireland’s first indoor medal since Derval O’Rourke claimed gold in Moscow in 2006. She entered the final event, the 800m, trailing the USA’s Taliyah Brooks by just three points. With a determined push, she finished third in the race, ahead of Brooks, securing her spot on the podium.
Finland’s Saga Vanninen completed a European and World gold double with a winning score of 4,821 points, 79 points ahead of O’Connor, who finished with a 73-point lead over Brooks.
Strong Performance Across Five Events
The final 800m was a fiercely contested race, with O’Connor settling into fourth place early on as Brooks stayed close behind. She surged into third position on the third lap and maintained her pace in the final stretch, sealing her silver-medal finish with confidence.
O’Connor’s day began in the early hours with the 60m hurdles, where she set a personal best of 8.30 seconds, finishing fourth in her heat. She followed up with another lifetime best in the shot put, throwing 14.64m.
Her consistency continued in the high jump, where she cleared 1.81m, sharing the top spot with the USA’s Timara Chapman. In the long jump, she posted two consecutive personal bests—6.30m and 6.32m—before fouling on her third attempt, entering the final event in third place.
A Landmark Moment for Irish Athletics
Athletics Ireland High Performance Director Paul McNamara hailed O’Connor’s achievement as a significant milestone for Irish athletics.
“We knew coming over here that Kate had a real medal opportunity, but she had to deliver, and she delivered in spades,” McNamara told RTÉ’s News at One.
He emphasized the difficulty of medaling in combined events, particularly on the world stage.
“Europe is the home of combined eventing. For Kate to medal in Europe was significant, but to move on and do the same thing within two weeks in a very attritional event is massive.”
O’Connor has enjoyed an exceptional indoor season, setting nine personal bests in her last 10 events. With the outdoor season ahead, she will transition to the heptathlon, which includes the javelin and 200m—events that suit her strengths.
“Javelin is Kate’s strongest event, so as she moves into heptathlon, she is moving up and moving on,” McNamara added. “She looks a different athlete. She is a different athlete.”
Other Irish Performances
Elsewhere, Andrew Coscoran narrowly missed out on a place in the men’s 1500m final, finishing third in his heat with a time of 3:40.79—just 0.71 seconds behind Austria’s Raphael Pallitsch. World record holder Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway won the heat in 3:39.80.
Sophie O’Sullivan also impressed, setting a personal best of 4:16.68 while finishing sixth in her 1500m heat.
O’Connor’s historic silver adds to an already promising year for Irish athletics, with the Paris Olympics on the horizon.
