Waterford Secure First League Win Under Queally with Victory Over Laois

Waterford returned to winning ways in the Allianz Hurling League Division 1B with a commanding victory over Laois at Walsh Park, securing a first win under new manager Peter Queally.

The Déise, eager to bounce back from their shock defeat to Carlow, were spearheaded by standout performances from Padraig Fitzgerald and Patrick Fitzgerald. Padraig racked up an impressive 0-13, while Patrick contributed 1-04, helping Waterford to a decisive ten-point victory.

Laois, seeking their first win against Waterford in over four decades, made a promising start when Paddy Purcell opened the scoring. However, Waterford responded quickly through Jamie Barron and Shane Bennett before capitalizing on a goalkeeping error. A long ball into the Laois defense was mishandled by Enda Rowland, allowing Patrick Fitzgerald to pounce and find the net just two minutes in.

Despite falling behind, Laois fought back with a five-point streak, including two frees from Tomas Keyes and a long-range effort from Rowland. Waterford, however, regained control through the accuracy of Padraig Fitzgerald and Jamie Barron, pushing ahead 1-10 to 0-8 by the 25th minute.

Michael Kiely was solid in defense, breaking up Laois attacks as Waterford maintained their advantage. Although Jer Quinlan and Keyes kept Laois within reach, Fitzgerald’s pinpoint accuracy from frees ensured Waterford went into halftime leading 1-13 to 0-12.

The second half began with frustration for Laois, as three early wides stalled their momentum. While Aidan Corby reduced the deficit to a goal, Waterford’s Fitzgerald continued to dictate proceedings with his reliable free-taking. Laois struggled with their shooting, registering seven wides, which ultimately proved costly.

Barron, displaying his All-Star credentials, played a key role in setting up scores. Kevin Mahony added his name to the scoresheet, while Patrick Fitzgerald produced a moment of brilliance by keeping a seemingly wide effort in play and turning it into a point.

As the game entered the final stages, Waterford extended their lead to eight points with Fitzgerald again on target. Although Jordan Walshe and Aaron Dunphy offered some resistance for Laois, the Déise’s attacking depth ensured a comfortable finish. Late scores from Peter Hogan and Mahony sealed a deserved win, ending a frustrating start to their campaign.

Next up, Waterford travel to Corrigan Park for a clash with Antrim in what promises to be a pivotal encounter for their promotion push.
